We know that vivid hair color is all the rage right now and growing in popularity. Whether you love soft pastels like pink and silver, or a deep hue of blue or red, getting your natural hair light enough to achieve these beautiful shades usually involves bleach. “Lightening the hair can affect its integrity, making it hard to hold on to color,” says colorist Paul Gambutti. Read on to see how to keep your signature vivid color from fading and longer lasting results.
#1 Extra time goes a long way. Allow vibrant colors to process a little longer than recommended, even if it starts out a shade darker than desired. Vivid colors are typically made with direct dyes, which sit close to the surface of the hair strand, making them prone to fast fading. Starting with a deepened shade will allow you to get away with a few extra shampoos.
#2 Water is not your friend. The longer you can go in between washes the better. Try a dry shampoo as an alternative to getting your hair wet with water; water can expedite color fading.
#3 If you must wash, be sure to use cool water. Your shampoo and conditioner choice should be sulfate free. Sulfates, especially those of low quality, can remove the natural oils found in your hair and result in color fading. Always opt for professional haircare products to maintain your color services.
#4 Say no to heat. Ease up on the heat styling; hot tools can cause pre-mature fading.
Pro TipWhen spending time in the sun, cover your hair with a hat to protect against harmful UVA/UVB rays that can cause premature fading.
#5 Choose the subscription. Unsure of which shade would best suit you? Professional grade vivid and pastel shades are available exclusively through a Color&Co consultation. Your colorist will prescribe the best shade for you, then you can choose between a one-time purchase or a subscription. The subscription will not only save you 25%, but you will also always have your shade ready to refresh at your fingertips!
#6 Color conditioners are a great short-term fix. Keep your hair looking freshly colored between shampoos by using a tinted conditioner. Use once a week or on an as-needed basis with a focus on the ends of your hair. Be patient and let it work its magic before rinsing too soon.
Keep those vibrant shades bright and shine on all you unicorns and mermaids out there!!
